Make decisions – 4 tips for better decisions
I just can’t decide
I think everyone of us said those words at least once in our life. Sometimes when we say that we have to
make a hard and life changing decision. But maybe it’s also just a really small decision like „What am I gonna eat today?“. Decisions over decisions.
I never thought much while I said „I just can’t decide“. But today I know that it’s a real git to be able to make right decisions fast. I was a damn „overthinker“ all time in my life. I was a genius in thinking of one stupid thing a whole night long. And the next day.
One day I read a book about decisions. A really great book that showed me how to make good decisions. I realized that decisions are one of the most important thing in our life…
Everything’s a decision
You make decisions every minute. Every single thing is a decision. Even the fact that you’re reading this right now was a decision.
These decisions we mostly make unaware. They’re made unconscious. We don’t think of them. It happens automatically.
Did you also know that it’s a decision how your life will be in future?
Yeah, maybe it’s not your fault if you’re in something like a phase between. That’s where we all are sometimes. But it’s decision to come out or stay there. Always. You can decide if you’re happy or sad. If you’re rich or poor – your decision. And that’s fact in any case.
And if you find yourself in a bad situation – it’s your decision to come out or stay crying there. You can always decide to make the best out of every single situation.
Making decisions is hard for many people
Today so many people out there can’t make decision. They feel feel overwhelmed and move their decision to another day, another week, another month until they don’t have to make the decision anymore cause there’s nothing left to decide about.
In my opinion this is no way to go through life. Because if you act this way you give the control over your life to someone else. Take responsibility!
Here are my 4 best tips for better decisions.
#1 Ask yourself: Is it still relevant in 5 years?
I always ask myself how relevant this decision is for me in 5 years from now. Because sometimes we think that we have to make a really huge decision. But truly it’s just something small. The size of our decision becomes conscious when you ask yourself if it’s still relevant in 5 years.
If I don’t know if I should color my hair red, than I ask myself how relevant it is in 5 years. And in this case it’s not really relevant. Cause if it looked bad, it doesn’t have an impact on my life in 5 years. It’s a small decision with no real consequences.
#2 What’s the worst that could happen?
That’s the next very important question I ask myself when I have to make decisions. I use this question when I have to make bigger decisions. If I can live with the worst that could happen, I take the risk and do it. If I can’t then I decide against it.
For example…
If I want to quit my job there are two sides. The good one is: I want to quit my job because it doesn’t make me happy anymore. I want a new way and this is the first step to walk to my new direction.
The other side is: It could be that my new decision isn’t as great as I imagine it. I could fail or not find a new job or whatever.
If I can live with all the bad things that could happen, then I take the risk and quit my job.
But if I had to turn a wheel of fortune where I could win a big amount of money 5 times and once lose my life – I wouldn’t turn the wheel. Cause the worst is nothing I want to risk in this case.
#3 What would I do if it was about life and death?
In life threatening situations we decide intuitive. And this is the right decision in most cases. That’s why I sometimes imagine that I’m into a life threatening situation and have to make the decision immediately. That’s a way to make reeeeeally fast decisions.
#4 Don’t think too much
Do you know that? You’re sitting in school, writing an exam and in the end you read again all your answers when you have the time. Suddenly you’re not sure anymore if your answer to question 5 is really right. Is it really answer B? Now you think that C is right and you tick C. Then after some days you get the exam back and determine that „B“ were right and you made your right answer wrong because you thought of it for too long.
And that’s the same in life. Don’t think too much. Good decisions don’t come from thinking about it 10 times. The first decision is mostly the best one. 🙂
