Up and down – The way of life
Life goes up and down. All the time. It doesn’t just go up. And that’s great.
“Up and down” means being ALIVE

Often I caught myself thinking things like “My life’s an up and down. Always when I’m up I fall down again directly after I reached the top.” And this sentence is just so damn negative that I’m really happy that I don’t say things like that anymore. I don’t even think things like that.
I think every life is an up and down. And if I had a free wish and someone could give me a life without the downs I would thankfully reject that offer.
Cause today I know that life’s exactly about that.
Lows make you stronger
Life’s about making the best out of our low times. Because without lows we don’t grow.
Imagine you’d always stand on top of a mountain enjoying the view. I think you won’t enjoy it for a really long time. Because if this is your standard level that always stays if you reached it once it won’t be really special after some time. There would be no growth in your life anymore. And that’s a really sad thought.
A good friend of mine once said:
As long as you have ups and downs in life everything’s fine. If the “lifeline” would go straight you were dead.
I’ll never forget that sentence.
Everyone of us has this lifeline. Our heartbeat is this lifeline. The line goes up and down with every heartbeat. And that’s healthy. But if it stops doing this and just goes straight… we all know what this means.
Our heartbeat is not what keeps you alive. Our lifeline is. And I don’t mean this in a medical sense. I mean this for our lives. We need those ups and downs to live.
We want to grow and develop our personality steadily and this only works if we stand at the lowest point in our lifeline just to start climbing a new mountain every once in a while.
Sometimes we walk down voluntary
Being at the lowest point of the current curve doesn’t mean that we feel sad or something like that. Sometimes we walk down voluntary. For example: If you set a new goal then the goal is the peak of the mountain and you are at the lowest point because you just started. This means you start walking in a few moments and come up higher.
This is how we grow.
Sometimes we fall down
Of course there are times when we don’t walk down voluntary – but fall down. Not always we set goals and just start at zero. Sometimes we fail and fall. And sometimes there happen unforeseen things that set us back.
Earlier in my life I had many of those “falls” – I always fell back again and that made me think things like I told you at the beginning of this article. “My life’s an up and down. Always when I’m up I fall down again directly after I reached the top.” I really thought that there won’t come better times and that I’ll be here like forever. Also the belief in myself was completely washed away…
When I was at really young age there happened things I couldn’t influence. BUT when I grew older I could have influenced it. At least my reaction to some situations.
Keep walking
I stopped walking at some point in my life. When I thought that everything’s shit anyway I just stopped and thought that I can’t do anything for a better life. Some years passed and every morning I got up like “Good morning dear worries”. And this wasn’t just a joke or a stupid spell. I really thought every morning that this day is gonna be as bad as the other ones were. No other opportunity was open into my mind. The day just has to be bad. I knew it right after getting up.
Guess what: All those days were bad. As I predicted it.
One great day I woke up and realized that this wasn’t the fault of the universe or somebody else. It was my fault. I realized that I have to keep walking to change something and that I have to fight. There were too many situations in my life where I stopped walking instead of starting to run.
I know there are so many more people out there that have the same problem. And the only solution to come to a better life is: Realize that not everything’s bad. Keep walking and smile. This is the very first step. But you gotta go it by yourself.
There’s a solution for everything – if you always keep your goal in mind.
It WILL get better
Today I’m not spared of bad days, experiences and happenings. But I keep my focus on the positive.
If you believe it or not: If I’m having a bad day I’m really looking forward to the better times that are already arriving! Now I know that life’s an up and down and I’m happy about the ups that reward me and also about the downs that strengthens me.
Sometimes you can’t directly influence what happens. But you can always influence how you react and which effects the situation has on your life.
Enjoy the up and down! This means LIFE.
How do you master your downs?

Another wonderful article, Sam. A lot of people say that we are products of our environments. And while this may be true to a degree, I think the greater truth is that we are a product of our attitudes! Thank you for always writing such thought provoking articles!
